A reflective view of Eden's 1st Birthday

After I wrote Eden’s birthday blog, it actually hit me that Eden was a year old. And there was nothing I could do to change that. Not that I needed to, really. Just that, if I did, I couldn't. I re-read our blogs from last August, when she first came into our world and the days that followed. Al and I told the same story from two different views. I had forgotten how tiny she was against us, and how her little cries were music to our ears. How I didn't think it was possible for a human being (me) to be that sleep deprived, and still be alive. It seemed like the longest nine months of our lives waiting for her, and now 12 more have past. I’m going to be a basket case come Kindergarten! You know, I didn’t think I knew what I was doing as a new mom from day to day, but looking back, I guess maybe I did.

Here, a few photos of the 'opening presents' part after we returned to Wilcox.

Hmm, this looks edible....

Al found this bib for Eden in St. Louis. It reads, "Official Potluck Taster"

Mommy's little girl, ball cap and all. Thanks, Jerry and Sarah!

Eden's 1st Birthday

After reading a dozen articles on what people have done for their first child’s first birthday, I quickly realized that nothing I would do could come close to making it in a feature magazine article, or front page news, so I opted for something more practical. (Imagine that from ME)…. I read that the average 1st b-day party in 2005 cost between $200-$400. I find this absolutely insane, since Eden isn’t even going to remember this day, let alone care. “Presents? Whatever! Mom, give me PAPER!”

Since we have no family in the area, and Michigan was too far a drive, we took off on our family camping trip the week before and figured we’d think of something special during the week. Well, the 22nd came around, and we sat around our campsite saying to each other, “So, did you think of anything fun to do?” and, “Did we get her anything?”

In the end, we loaded up the dogs and all headed into the tiny town of Ashland, Nebraska, 3 miles from where we were camping, to the grocery store. I ran in to buy candles and then we found an ice cream stand. I whipped out some Otis Spunkemeyer chocolate chip breakfast muffins, jammed a candle in the top, and waited for Al to order us some vanilla soft serve. (Since we didn’t have matches, you’ll just have to imagine the candle’s flame.) We sang Happy Birthday with a bunch of high school boys watching us with a look of oddity, and then dug in. Muffins are less messy than cake, I’m glad to say.

No presents, no balloons or streamers, no older cousins running around having fun. But it was a birthday, none the less. And for about five bucks, it was alright! (Though, the cousins would have been a bonus…maybe next year?)

So I won’t get the ‘mother-of-the-year’ award. That’s Ok. Eden loves me anyway.

Summer vacation is over...

Summer vacation is over...school started for our town last week, while Al and I were still enjoying our family vacation. We came home to quiet streets and the school bell buzzing (which we can hear from the living room). Summer used to last forever, what happened? Did I grow up and not notice?? Pictures to follow from our week away, but so many pressing things to do. Laundry comes to mind. A nap sounds good, too....

Spaghetti Face

Eden loves Spaghetti...... I have no clue how she got it all over her face, arms, hair etc.... She was tired and kept putting in a fist full, then rubbing her eyes, but as for the rest of the body, I'm clueless. I was thankful it was Al's night for the bath!

St. Louis with Papa and Grandma Kenny

Last week, Al had to be in St. Louis for the new Lutheran Service Book (LSB) hymnal training. He's going to be a presenter for the state of Nebraska this fall. The training was held at the Internation Center in Kirkwood, otherwise known as the Purple Palace. My parents came down to visit with us and we mostly sat out the 106 degree heat by enjoying the pool and the hotel's air conditioning. On the suggestion of a friend, we went to Grant's farm on a 'cool' 90 degree day and throughly enjoyed it, as well as the U.S. Grant Historical Site near the farm.
